The True Wealth: Nurturing Our Spiritual Bank Accounts.
Written by Kateb Nuri-Alim Shunnar
In our fast-paced, materialistic world, it's easy to fall into the trap of measuring wealth solely by the amount of money and possessions we accumulate. Yes, having financial stability and a comfortable home is important, often necessary. But when these material aspects become the primary drivers of our lives, we veer dangerously off course, akin to letting an infant take the wheel on a high-speed highway journey to another state. Money and possessions should always be mere passengers in our life's vehicle—preferably in the third row or even the trunk. When they start to create chaos and make the journey mentally, emotionally, morally, physically, and, most importantly, spiritually draining, it’s time to pull over and let them out.
There is profound wisdom in the scripture: "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" We all, myself included, sometimes let material wealth overshadow our spiritual health. We prioritize money and possessions, pushing aside our connection with the Creator, our own souls, and the angels placed in our lives. This misplaced focus dries up our spiritual bank accounts, depleting the funds necessary for spiritual well-being. Consequently, when we send up a prayer or seek divine assistance, our spiritual checks may bounce due to insufficient funds.
Having a spiritual bank account helps us manage our daily spiritual expenditures and recurring bills. The overflow we save can protect us from life's unexpected challenges. Just like maintaining a healthy financial bank account ensures we can cover our expenses and save for future needs, nurturing our spiritual bank account safeguards our inner peace and spiritual resilience.
In our life's journey, we often allow money and possessions to occupy the driver's seat, leading us down paths that may appear prosperous but are spiritually barren. The true driver of our life should be our spiritual well-being, guided by our connection with the Creator. Imagine the Creator as the most skilled and wise chauffeur, steering us through life's twists and turns with unmatched precision and care. When we allow the Creator to guide us, we navigate through challenges with a sense of peace and purpose that material wealth alone can never provide.
I've experienced firsthand how easy it is to let money and possessions dictate my path. The allure of a higher paycheck, a bigger house, or the latest gadget can be tempting. But each time I let these desires take the wheel, I've found myself feeling lost, stressed, and spiritually drained. It’s like driving on an endless highway with no rest stop in sight. Conversely, when I prioritize my spiritual health and place my trust in the Creator, I feel a profound sense of direction and fulfillment. It's akin to finding a serene, scenic route where every turn brings new beauty and peace.
Our spiritual bank account functions similarly to a financial one, with deposits and withdrawals that reflect our spiritual health. Every act of kindness, moment of gratitude, and time spent in prayer or meditation is a deposit. These deposits build up our spiritual wealth, providing a reserve of peace, joy, and resilience. However, just like financial accounts, spiritual accounts also experience withdrawals. Negative thoughts, unkind actions, and neglect of our spiritual practices deplete our spiritual resources. When we focus excessively on material wealth, we make large withdrawals that can quickly empty our spiritual account.
I've noticed that when I neglect my spiritual practices in favor of chasing material gains, my spiritual bank account suffers. My days become filled with stress and dissatisfaction, no matter how much money I earn or possessions I acquire. It’s during these times that I remind myself of the importance of making regular spiritual deposits. I carve out time for meditation, reconnect with loved ones, and perform acts of kindness. These actions replenish my spiritual account, restoring my sense of balance and peace.
Just as financial banks offer overdraft protection to cover unexpected expenses, our spiritual bank account has its own form of protection: divine guidance. This protection is activated when we maintain a close connection with the Creator. When our spiritual account runs low, the Creator steps in, providing the necessary support to get us back on track. There have been moments in my life when I felt spiritually bankrupt, overwhelmed by challenges and devoid of inner peace. In these times, turning to the Creator has been my saving grace. Through prayer and reflection, I've received guidance and strength that no amount of money could ever provide. It's like having a limitless line of credit that never fails, as long as I maintain my relationship with the divine.
Investing in our spiritual well-being yields long-term benefits, much like financial investments. Regular spiritual practices, such as prayer, meditation, and acts of service, generate spiritual dividends that compound over time. These investments create a strong foundation, enabling us to weather life's storms with grace and resilience. I’ve learned that just as financial investments require patience and consistency, so do spiritual investments. There are no quick fixes or shortcuts to building spiritual wealth. It's a lifelong commitment to nurturing our inner selves and staying connected with the Creator. Each small act of kindness, moment of gratitude, and quiet prayer contributes to a growing reservoir of spiritual wealth that sustains us through all of life's ups and downs.
To maintain a healthy spiritual bank account, we must regularly balance our ledger, ensuring that our priorities align with our values. This involves reflecting on our daily actions and choices, making sure they contribute to our spiritual growth rather than depleting it. One practical way I balance my spiritual ledger is by setting aside time each day for reflection and gratitude. I review my actions, acknowledge my mistakes, and celebrate my spiritual successes. This practice helps me stay mindful of my priorities and make necessary adjustments to keep my spiritual account in good standing.
The greatest asset in our spiritual bank account is our connection with the Creator. This connection is more valuable than any material possession, providing us with infinite wisdom, love, and guidance. When we prioritize our relationship with the divine, everything else falls into place. Material wealth becomes secondary, merely enhancing our already rich spiritual life. In my own journey, I've found that the moments of deepest fulfillment and peace come from my connection with the Creator. These moments remind me that true wealth lies not in what I possess, but in the depth of my spiritual life. The Creator is the ultimate source of all good things, and nurturing this relationship brings a sense of abundance that no amount of money can ever match.
Reflecting on historical examples, Alexander the Great's final wishes highlight a profound realization. Despite his vast empire and immense wealth, he recognized the futility of his material conquests on his deathbed. His three last wishes were: that only his physicians carry his coffin to show that no doctor can save one from death; that his path to the grave be strewn with gold, silver, and precious stones from his treasury to signify that material wealth cannot accompany him after death; and that his hands be left dangling out of the coffin to illustrate that he came into the world empty-handed and would leave it in the same way. Alexander's reflection at the end of his life serves as a powerful reminder of the emptiness of material wealth without spiritual fulfillment. He finally realized how he had wasted his life putting his faith in everything else but the Creator.
Our journey towards true wealth requires us to constantly evaluate and nurture our spiritual bank account. By keeping material possessions as mere passengers and allowing the Creator to guide our path, we can achieve a sense of fulfillment and peace that transcends material wealth. Regular spiritual deposits, wise investments, and balancing our spiritual ledger ensure that our spiritual bank account remains healthy and robust. True wealth is not about accumulating money and possessions; it's about cultivating a rich, vibrant spiritual life. When we prioritize our connection with the Creator and nurture our inner selves, we build a reservoir of spiritual wealth that sustains us through all of life's challenges. This is the real wealth, a treasure that cannot be measured in dollars or possessions but in the depth of our spiritual fulfillment. As we continue on our journey, let us remember to keep our spiritual bank account in good standing. Let us make regular deposits through acts of kindness, gratitude, and prayer. Let us invest in our spiritual growth with patience and consistency. And most importantly, let us always prioritize our connection with the Creator, for this is the true source of all wealth and abundance.
